Our Patent Portfolio

Over the past decade, Gytheion has been awarded multiple patents by the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). Our research and development efforts are concentrated in the wireless networking and content security spaces. Below are our issued patents covering technologies that were invented by Joseph P. Marino and Jonathan Fortin.

Many of the technologies covered by our patents, including our remote firmware upgrade technology, were built for a product called the Spam Cube – the world's first home network security appliance. The Spam Cube was released in 2006 and was tested and reviewed by tech journalists such as Tom Spring of PC World and David Pogue of the New York Times. The Spam Cube also received a WebAward from the Web Marketing Association, and was featured on the front page of the New York Times business section, appeared in PC World magazine and was featured in ABC News, Engadget and other publications.

The Remote Firmware Upgrader is licensed by 10 leading wireless networking OEMs and the technology is in use in millions of wireless routers, access points and wireless gateways worldwide today. A notable licensee is a Fortune 500 technology company with a market capitalization exceeding $100B.

February 15, 2025 marked 20 years since Gytheion's remote firmware upgrading technology was first disclosed in patent application #60/653,163 at the USPTO. The '163 patent application was filed on February 15, 2005, and contained information based on design documentation written in the early 2000s for the Spam Cube product. As of 2025, all of Gytheion's Remote Firmware Upgrader patents, including the '109 and '353 patents, have expired and entered the public domain.
